FAQs
WHAT IS POWDER COATING?
Powder coating is a surface coating process that, unlike liquid paint, is applied through electrically charging paint particles to a metal substrate like aluminum, steel, iron. Once adhered to the surface the object is then baked(cured) in the oven typically at around 400 degrees. The process is superior for everyday items like rims, auto, and motorcycle parts as well as new metal fabrication like gates, railings, and other restoration projects.
WHY POWDER COAT?
A powder coated finish offers superior scratch, impact and chemical resistance. It can handle UV and salt conditions more readily than even today’s most sophisticated paints. The process is more economical and environmentally friendly. Unlike paints which rely heavily on solvents, powders reduce VOC emissions and the quick cure process allows fast turnaround that delivers a long lasting, durable product.
HOW DO YOU TAKE PAYMENT?
Cash or business check. We DO NOT accept cards at this time.
SOME AREAS OF MY PART NEED TO REMAIN FREE OF POWDER COATING. HOW WILL YOU PROTECT IT?
Many automotive and motorcycle parts have areas that should not be coated due to threading. We will mask off and plug those places prior to the coating process. Extra charges may apply.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE POWDER COAT TO DRY?
Powder coating is not like paint. It does not air dry. It is cured by heat. Generally a part is cured for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Once out of the oven and the part is cool to touch, you can put it in service.
CAN ANYTHING METAL BE POWDER COATED?
Typically, Yes. Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, Stainless and Steel Alloys and some solid Cast Metals. Provided it can hold an electrostatic charge. It must also be free from any excessive oil and lubricants, rubber coatings and plastic parts. Rust and corrosion must also be removed through blasting and metal prep. Additional costs may apply.
CAN YOU POWDER COAT OVER EXISTING POWDER COAT?
Yes. Just a light sanding is required.
CAN YOU POWDER COAT OVER PAINT?
No. All paint has to be abrasive blasted off.
CAN YOU POWDER COAT OVER BODY FILLERS LIKE BONDO?
No. However, we can powder coat over weld sticks and brass fillers.
CAN YOU POWDER COAT RIMS WITH THE TIRES ON?
No. The oven temperature can melt plastics and rubbers.
CAN I DROP MY VEHICLE OFF FOR WHEEL REFINISHING?
No, we are not a mechanic, service station or auto body shop. If you want your parts done you must bring them to us completely disassembled and ready for the restoration process.
